2017 will mark the centennial of U.S. entry into World War I. The war had a profound impact on the United States and on its global role. Well before the country entered the war, the U.S. had become a key supporter of the Allies, shifting the global balance of power to set the stage for what has been called the "American century."
Few events are so engrained into the American psyche and popular culture as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite the attack’s centrality in America’s road to war narrative, most Americans know very little about the causes of the event. The abridged understanding goes something like this: on December 7, 1941, the empire of Japan launched a sneak attack against the United States for no reason. Japan’s ambassadors had been engaged in discussions with American diplomats as a smokescreen, masking the “evil empire’s” true intentions—world domination.

Hoffungsvolle Erwartungen beider verfeindeten Lager lösten sich im Trommelfeuer der erbitterteren selbstzerstörerischen Offnsiven auf. Der Krieg wurde durch und durch ein gesamtstaatliches industrielles Unternehmen mit rücksichtlosem Akzent auf Effktivität und maximale Nutzung aller erreichbaren Ressourcen. Die, welche vielleicht ein wahres Interesse an einer Friedenslösung hatten wurden jedoch zu Geiseln Hunderttausender Opfer.
Diskutiert werden sollen die Grundlinien der protestantischen Verhältnisbestimmung von Religion und Politik im Hinblick auf Soldaten und Militär, Fragen protestantischer Militärethik und protestantischer Geschichtsdeutung. War der Soldat ein "freier Herr" und "dienstbarer Knecht" mit gottesfürchtigem Gewissen und aus Einsicht gehorsam - wie Martin Luther das in seiner Kriegsleuteschrift empfohlen hatte? Ist der Protestantismus eine friedsame Religion - oder haben seine Anhänger für den "reinen Glauben" getötet, indem sie die Reformation durch Krieg sicherten?
In Folge der militärischen Niederlage der Achsenmächte und der Etablierung kommunistischer Herrschaftssysteme in Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa unter sowjetischer Führung entschlossen sich bereits bestehende oder sich neu formierende, organisierte und rivalisierende Personenverbände gewaltsamen Widerstand gegen das neu etablierte Repressions- und Zwangssystem fortzusetzen bzw. zu entfalten.

Air forces have found that the answer to narrow, technically-focused understandings of air power has been, and continues to be, through education: the developing of a mastery of air power along with a broader of understanding of how and where it can best serve the needs of parent societies. Higher education for commanders and staffs develops critical thinking, creativity, and reasoning skills which better prepare individuals to think, to cope with unexpected problems and situations, and to anticipate military requirements.
Accidents are challenges to the structures of modern societies in the twentieth century. They expose structural weaknesses and often give rise to new developments and legal and social innovations that aim at preventing accidents or diminishing their impact. The consequences of accidents are enormous: They often lead to a huge death toll and vast economic costs and they disturb economic and social processes.

Auch 20 Jahre nach der Diskussion um die Ausstellung "Vernichtungskrieg - Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941 bis 1944" und trotz zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Veröffentlichungen und Tagungen bilden unkritische, populärwissenschaftliche Publikationen weiterhin ein bedeutendes Segment des Büchermarktes zur Wehrmacht, zur Waffen-SS und zum Zweiten Weltkrieg.
