Das Weltkriegsgedenkjahr 2014 wird zu einem Höhepunkt in der Beschäftigung mit dem Ersten Weltkrieg führen. Gleichzeitig wird die Bibliothek für Zeitgeschichte in der Württembergischen Landesbibliothek Stuttgart (BfZ) im Jahr 2015 einhundert Jahre alt. Die BfZ nimmt dies zum Anlass, in einem Artikelserie auf dem Portal Militärgeschichte ihre vielfältigen Sammlungen und Aktivitäten zum Ersten Weltkrieg zu präsentieren.

Am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts erschütterten zahlreiche Aufstände von Sklaven, freien Farbigen, weißen Pflanzern und Kaufleuten die karibischen Kolonien Frankreichs. Im Schatten des großen Sklavenaufstandes von Saint-Domingue wurden auch die französischen Kolonien in den Kleinen Antillen, die îles du vent – Martinique, Guadeloupe und Ste.-Lucie – von den revolutionären Umwälzungen getroffen. Die vielschichtigen innergesellschaftlichen Konflikte innerhalb dieser Kolonien umfassten nicht nur divergierende Partikularinteressen lokaler Pflanzer und Kaufleute, sondern auch grundsätzliche Fragen, die sich in diesen auf Sklaverei beruhenden Plantagenökonomien durch die Französische Revolution ergaben.

Like in former years the Educational Committee of the International Commission of Military History invites young ph.d. students to take part in a workshop for young scholars who are still working or have just finished their ph.d. thesis on a subject dealing with Socio-economic and Cultural Aspects of World War I.
The purpose of the workshop is to give young scholars the opportunity of discussing their projects with young as well as experienced colleagues from more than 40 Countries.

An kaum einem anderen Ort der römischen Welt wird die enge Verzahnung von Wirtschafts-, Sozial-, Politik- und Militärgeschichte so deutlich wie in Mogontiacum – dem römischen Mainz. Dies kann die Sonderausstellung "Im Dienst des Kaisers. Mainz – Stadt der römischen Legionen", die vom 26.05.2013 bis 05.01.2014 im Landesmuseum Mainz zu sehen ist, sehr plastisch und anschaulich darstellen. Nahezu alle Ausstellungsstücke sind Bestände des Landesmuseums und führen eindrucksvoll vor Augen, warum Mainz als "Mekka der provinzialrömischen Archäologie" (Th. Fischer) gesehen werden kann.

Krieg und gewalthafte Konfliktsituationen sind während der letzten beiden Jahrzehnte wieder verstärkt in das Blickfeld der Geschichtswissenschaft gerückt. Dies geht sowohl in Deutschland als auch in Frankreich mit einem historiographischen Wandlungsprozess einher, der zu einer Erneuerung der Geschichte von Militär und Krieg führt. Eine internationale Tagung am Deutschen Historischen Institut in Paris (DHIP) im März 2013 widmete sich vor diesem Hintergrund dem Thema Kriegs- und Gewalterfahrungen im 19. Jahrhundert in Deutschland und Frankreich. Die daraus hervorgegangenen und in diesem Themenschwerpunkt versammelten Beiträge fragen nach den Auswirkungen von Krieg und Gewalt auf die Wahrnehmung der historischen Akteure, die sowohl dem militärischen als auch zivilen Bereich angehörten.

The History and Political Science Department at Chestnut Hill College will host an interdisciplinary conference on "The Legacy of World War One."
Keynote speakers will be Jay Winter (Yale University) and Laura Lee Downs (European University Institute, Florence, Italy).
Proposals for papers or panels are invited on any issue related to the legacy of The Great War. Papers may relate to the immediate or long-term ramifications of the war: - political, -diplomatic, -military, -social, -economic, -technological, -intellectual, -cultural, etc.

The workshop will serve as "an introduction to researching war experience and its legacy: individual, family and community perspectives through the prism of the local, national and international".

To mark the centenary of the First World War, the British Commission for Military History, in Collaboration with the History of War research group of the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, and the National Army Museum, are holding a conference on the Armies of 1914.
The conference comprises a study day, to be held at King’s College London on 14 March, with a keynote address by Professor Hew Strachan of Oxford University, and a public day, taking place at the National Army Museum on Saturday 15 March.

La politique de recrutement du Premier Empire a permis au régime napoléonien d’appeler sous les drapeaux un grand nombre de jeunes hommes. Dans la mesure où ceux-ci participent aux nombreux conflits du début du XIXe siècle, ils sont confrontés à l’expérience de la guerre et de la violence qui constitue alors un phénomène social répandu. Dans cette contribution, ces expériences, encore trop souvent négligées par l’historiographie, sont examinées par le biais d’une anthropologie historique.
