    The program committee invites paper proposals that focus on Dissent, Activism and Transformation in the World War I Era. The First World War was a watershed event in modern world history and among the most significant events in the 20th century. The war triggered dissent and activism; and it had an impact on political activism, social reform, and cultural expression. In turn, these developments transformed society, politics, and culture. This conference will explore the themes of dissent, activism, and transformation during the war and the immediate postwar era.

  • Intelligence in the Mediterranean and the Balkans

    The birthplace of western civilization, the Mediterranean region has seen the rise and fall of empires, numerous conflicts and wars, and over three thousand years of intelligence operations. Today the Mediterranean and Balkan regions are undergoing profound regional transformations, in the aftermaths of the 1990s Balkan wars and the more recent "Arab Spring" revolutions.

  • Case Study for publication project: "Remembering the Great War"

    I am seeking a German case study as a contribution to a forthcoming volume entitled "Remembering the Great War". The book is concerned with current day practices and politics of remembering the First World War, including the relationship between family history and public representations of war, and the continuing politics of remembering the war beyond those who actually experienced it.

    Der Begriff Militär – eine Chimäre des 19. Jahrhunderts, ein Staatsmythos? Die Identifikation mit dieser Begrifflichkeit generierte in den letzten beiden Jahrhunderten fast unweigerlich eine Vorstellungswelt, die an Siege oder Niederlagen des Militärs anknüpft. Hierbei versucht die new military history, durch mediale Bildgewalt entstandene Narrative mit Hilfe verschiedenster Quellenbestände zu entflechten.

    In November 2011, the Research Center of the Péronne Historial de la Grande Guerre organised a conference on the anticipation of warfare before 1914. For the 1914 Centenary, the Center is now preparing a conference on the unanticipated: how did contemporaries make sense of the primordial experiences that marked the conflict and shaped its representations?

  • Bundeswehr und Medien in der jüngsten Geschichte und heute

    Obwohl sich alle jungen Männer mit deutscher Staatsbürgerschaft bis zum letzten Jahr mit dem Wehrdienst auseinandersetzen mussten, und die Bundeswehr seit ihrer Aufstellung 1955 kritisch von der Öffentlichkeit begleitet wird, ist das Verhältnis von Öffentlichkeit, veröffentlichter Meinung und Bundeswehr kein systematischer Forschungsgegenstand in der Geschichtswissenschaft oder den Sozialwissenschaften. Es liegen kaum historische oder sozialwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen vor, die sich mit dem Gegen-, Neben- und Miteinander von Medien und Bundeswehr systematisch auseinandersetzen.
