    National defence is essential for a nation's survival. The Baltic States, who regained independence during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, found themselves in a situation with no plans, means or capabilities for military defence. There were deficiencies in knowledge and experience, there were no examples to follow – national defence had to be re-invented. By today, this has become history, which allows us to study former events, alternatives and choices from the perspective of military history.

    Der Wiener Kongress gilt als eines der wichtigsten historischen Ereignisse im Übergang vom Ancien Régime zur modernen europäischen Staatenwelt. Die im Zeitraum von wenigen Monaten in Wien vereinbarte politische und territoriale Neuordnung Europas stellte zum einen die Grundlage einer neuen internationalen Friedensordnung dar, die für ein halbes Jahrhundert Bestand hatte. Die in Wien versammelten Staatsmänner entwickelten zum anderen aber auch eine zukunftsweisende Form von politischer Kultur.

  • Revolutions in the Balkans. Revolts and Uprisings in the Era of Nationalism (1804-1908)

    The chronological frame of the conference extends from the first Serbian uprising(1804) to the Young Turk Revolution (1908). During these hundred years, the map of Southeastern Europe was reshaped through a series of revolutionary movements,mainly national and liberal. Besides, this part of Europe, mostly under Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman rule, experienced the echo of the European revolutions in 1830 and 1848, and of the unification of Italy and of Germany. We may claim that the "Age of Revolutions" in the Balkans expanded until the early twentieth century.

    The German Historical Institute in Moscow has partnered with the international project 1914-1918-online. International Encyclopedia of the First World War (www.1914-1918-online.net). The 1914-1918-online project aims to illustrate the global and regional dimensions of the First World War within the scope of an online encyclopedia. In addition to thematic articles and an overview of current research on the First World War, the encyclopedia will make audio and visual materials available to the public.

  • Anarchism 1914-18: Internationalism, Militarism and War

    In the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War, the aims of the panel are to re-examine anarchist responses to the war, conceptions of militarism, pacifism and non-violence and the impact of the war on anarchist movements in and outside Europe. Papers which discuss the activities of anti-war activists (particularly transnational), the treatment of conscientious objectors, the experiences of anarchists caught up in the conflict and the impact of the war on the anarchist movements (at local, regional national and international levels) are welcome.
