2017 marks the hundredth anniversary of US entry into the First World War. That conflict saw the emergence of the US as a global military power, but also had a profound impact on American society and culture. In subsequent years, war and conflict of various sorts have shaped the way that Americans think about their place in the world and their relationships with each other, and has molded the way that the US is viewed in international and transnational contexts.

Matthew Bennett will talk about one of the most famous dates in English history - 14 October 1066. On this day, William Duke of Normandy, leading an army of his own subjects, along with many allies and mercenaries, attacked uphill and all day long, until the defending king, Harold Godwinesson, was killed and his forces overpowered. This was only the beginning of a six-year conquest that led to profound changes in the way that England was governed, the law and even the language spoken by the ruling class - French.

The unanticipated reality of the Great War in Europe was siege warfare of a radically new kind, in which each side besieged the other, attacking and defending, and owing to coalition warfare, did so on multiple "fronts".
