Emile Simpson will present his book "War from the Ground Up: Twenty-First Century Combat as Politics", in which he put forward a radical new interpretation of the phenomenon of war in the modern world. Simpson argues that, in a globalised world, it is no longer appropriate to think of war as a zero sum game between two sides trying to defeat each other militarily. Rather, in the age of global mass media, war takes place before a multiplicity of audiences, whom belligerents must win over in the same way civilian politicians win over electorates.
The vital role played by combined operations and special intelligence units - such as Force 136, Z Special Unit, and the famed Chindits - in disrupting the Japanese war effort is frequently overlooked. This talk will explore how winning over the local populations and becoming expert in jungle warfare and survival, use of raids, sabotage and guerrilla attacks significantly undermined the Japanese and helped turn the tide of the war in the Far East.
The recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have provoked intense discussion both inside and outside the United States on the nature of a distinct "American Way of War". This lecture addresses the intellectual antecedents of this term and its role in shaping both scholarly and military ideas about how the USA conducts war.

Von 1945 bis 1994 diente das Gelände als sowjetischer Militärflugplatz und als Ausbildungsstätte für Logistik.
The First World War is principally seen as a European conflict, but there was also a global war in the Middle East involving a British Army made up of robust, multi-ethnic troops from Australia, New Zealand and India. Battles were fought across Sinai and Palestine culminating in the decisive Battle of Megiddo. High levels of disease and combat casualties took their toll, but the imperial army played a fundamental role in securing British victory.
