May 2013 marks the seventieth anniversary of perhaps the major turning point in the Allied victory over the Germans in the Atlantic during the Second World War ‒ the defeat of the Uboats in mid-ocean. The official commemoration in Liverpool over the weekend of 25-26 May 2013 provides the opportunity for a preceding two-day conference on 23-24 May, where the various aspects of the campaign can be remembered, studied, and discussed. The Second World War transformed Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. German dreams of racial purity in the East resulted in mass death, displacement, and the near total eradication of East European Jewry. The defeat of Hitler's Reich enabled the Soviets to extend their own empire in Eastern Europe, as the advancing Red Army brought new territories under Moscow's control. 2011 jährte sich zum zwanzigsten Mal der Beginn des Krieges um ethnisch homogene Territorien in Jugoslawien. Es handelte sich dabei um den ersten Krieg in Europa, der fast fünfzig Jahre nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges losbrach. Nicht nur in den unmittelbaren Reaktionen, die von Entsetzen, Ratlosigkeit bis hin zu Indifferenz und Verdrängung reichten, berührten die Kriege in Kroatien, Bosnien und Kosovo die europäische Öffentlichkeit. The study of war and warfare through the centuries has generated increasing scholarly attention over the last years. In the resulting literature, historians have tended to focus on pre-war settings, war experiences, and the influence of war memories on national identities. Yet, despite the well-known case of the post-1945 period, it is only recently that scholars working in the field of the so-called "New Military History" have discovered the study of post-war epochs as times of reconstruction and thus as a rewarding fields of historical inquiry. The aim of the Conference is to consider the causes, the course, and the political, social and economic consequences of the First World War on the basis of new historical research in the context of European and more specifically Balkan history. The conference will also explore the legacy of World War One and its place in collective memory today. It intends to highlight the significance of the First World War for Eastern and Southeastern European societies but at the same time will consider the larger European and international picture. In den letzten Jahren des amerikanischen Engagements in Vietnam wurde immer stärker klar, wie sehr sich das amerikanische Militär in diesem Krieg über jedes Maß hinaus entgrenzt hatte. Alltägliche Gewalt gegen Fremde und auch eigene Kameraden war normal geworden; lethargische Soldaten agierten oftmals wider jede ethische oder moralische Maxime. Aus dem Krieg ging das amerikanische Militär zerrüttet hervor und steuerte damit in die wohl schwerste Krise seiner Geschichte.

Die europäischen Kriege im Zeitalter Napoleons brachten mit ihren Armeen, Kampagnen sowie den gewonnenen und verlorenen Schlachten auch das Problem von Kriegsgefangenen mit sich. Selbst Napoleon blieb das Schicksal der Kriegsgefangenschaft nicht erspart. Allerdings weiß man heute in der Geschichtswissenschaft mehr über die Kriegsgefangenschaft Napoleons als über die zahlreichen Kriegsgefangenen der napoleonischen Kriege.
