When Comics go to War - Representations, Confrontations, Receptions in European Societies

In Europe, stories about war have always played a certain role in comics as a means of propaganda and glorification, but also of denunciation. Besides, comics represent transmission belts for memories, knowledge and images about war, by sometimes even going beyond what is allowed to be visualised. Thus, comics do not only feed the imagination on war, but they modify it at the same time - all the more in recent times since the amount of stories drawn on war keeps increasing, the range of topics, spaces and perspectives expanding and the propagation of stories across Europe intensifying.

Die Geschichte der Fotografie kennt an sich nur wenige Namen berühmter Fotografen aus der Zeit des Ersten Weltkrieges, geschweige denn deren komplette Werke.

In der Sonderausstellung "Fotografen des Krieges" zeigt das HGM eine Auswahl von drei der insgesamt fünf bedeutendsten tschechischen Fotografen, welche im Ersten Weltkrieg als Angehörige der k. u. k. Armee am Kriegsgeschehen teilnahmen und ihren Kriegsalltag mit Hilfe ihrer Fotoapparate dokumentierten.

Die durch die Medien verbreiteten Nachrichten von Gewaltakten, die von beiden Seiten verübt werden, lösen in den weitgehend gewaltlosen Gesellschaften des Westens Empörung und Bestürzung aus. Die Perzeption von Gewalt, aber auch deren Anwendung hängt dabei wesentlich von der Gewaltkultur in der Gesellschaft bzw. innerhalb eines ihrer Glieder, dem Militär ab. Doch kann überhaupt von nationalen oder regionalen Gewaltkulturen gesprochen werden?
