Die Kämpfe des Jahres 1914 deuteten auf vielfältige Weise an, wie neuartig dieser Krieg war. Die weitere Kriegführung der beteiligten Staaten wurde daher geprägt durch die Suche nach effektiven Mitteln – taktischen wie technischen – um den Gegner zu bezwingen. Es gehörte zur Zwangsläufigkeit dieser Entwicklung, dass der Konflikt von der Front in das Hinterland ausstrahlte und hier ganze Gesellschaften in Mitleidenschaft zog. So kamen nicht nur neue Feinde auf dem Gefechtsfeld hinzu, der Krieg wurde zudem von mehr und mehr menschenfeindlichen Erscheinungen begleitet. Dieser Umstand stellte die beteiligten Staaten und deren Bevölkerung in allen Bereichen ihrer Existenz vor bislang nicht bekannte Herausforderungen.

Die zweite Konferenz des Zyklus "Die an das Schlachtfeld gefesselten Jahre 1914–1918" konzentriert sich diesbezüglich auf das Geschehen des Jahres 1915. Sie versucht, anhand eines breiten Spektrums von Beiträgen aus unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, ein spezifisches Bild dieses Kriegsjahres nachzuzeichnen.
