The Cold War affected all points on the global compass, not just East and West, but also North and South. The clash between rival capitalist and communist systems showed how the world was at odds with its future in the wake of the Second World War and impacted all walks of life from governance to popular culture. Though war never officially broke out between the Western and Eastern Blocs, many of the wars across world in the second half of the twentieth century bore some link to the Cold War.

In der Schwarzmeerhafenstadt Suchum, der Hauptstadt der zwischen Georgien und Russland gelegenen Republik Abchasien, befindet sich das Abchasische Staatsarchiv. Die Unabhängigkeit des seit 1992 unabhängigen Staates ist lediglich von sechs UN-Mitgliedsstaaten – allen voran Russland – anerkannt. Viele weitere, darunter vor allem die Türkei, pflegen jedoch informelle Beziehungen mit der Kaukasusrepublik.

Rebuilding West Germany and Its Armed Forces

After the Second World War, the United States invested a large amount of US tax revenues into reconstruction across almost all of Europe. In this context, the successful economic redevelopment induced by the European Recovery Program is still remembered. However, after the foundation of NATO in 1949 the Western European allies sought for more US-aid. Due to the success of the ERP the Eisenhower administration came up with a similar plan to build up the West German armed forces, the so-called "Nash-Commitment".

Der Kalte Krieg war ein globaler Konflikt. So überrascht es kaum, dass überall auf der Welt zum Thema gearbeitet wird. Die Interviewreihe "Forschung zum Kalten Krieg - eine Bestandsaufnahme" misst die Genese der Forschung gestern und heute ebenso aus, wie sie nach zukünftigen Entwicklungen fragt. Die siebenteilige Reihe ist eine Kooperation des Berliner Kollegs Kalter Krieg und des Portals Militärgeschichte. Sie wurde von Dr. Christoph Nübel (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) und Dr. Klaas Voß (Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung) durchgeführt. Diesmal im Interview: Prof. Dr. Hermann Wentker (Leiter der Forschungsabteilung des Instituts für Zeitgeschichte München - Berlin in Lichterfelde - Berlin, Deutschland).
